Trial and Error

There’s no guarantee that you’ll beat certain bosses, dungeons or any other challenge on your first attempt. Be prepared to fail at least once, if not multiple times before you finally have the solution to defeat a difficult boss or dungeon.

How to become better at soloing

Understand Your School of Magic

-Every school of magic has its own strengths and weaknesses, so you’ll have to learn each one differently. It’s up to you to know which of the seven schools of magic is best suited for you and how to properly adapt to it in order to independently play Wizard101.

School of Fire

Fire wizards use many attacks that can apply damage-over-time. This effect from their attacks will damage enemies over multiple rounds. This tactic is very useful for slowly chipping away the enemy’s health and removing any shields without losing attack power! Fire wizards however do not have many utility spells for themselves and teammates and have the second lowest health in the game.

School of Ice

Ice wizards are very sturdy! They have the highest amount of health and resistances out of all schools of magic making them tough opponents who can last long in battle! Some attacks from ice wizards can stun enemies, forcing them to pass on their turn. They can even use Tower Shields, a spell that can reduce incoming damage from ANY school of magic. Ice wizards however, are weak when attacking.

School of Storm

Storm wizards possess strong power in their magic! They are capable of dealing great amounts of damage to opponents in short amounts of time. Storm wizards have the strongest damaging spells in the game and are often seen as leading attacks within teams. Storm wizards however, have the lowest health and resistances out of all schools of magic. This means that they can die rather quickly if they are not careful!

School of Life

Life wizards have magic that is based around supporting other players and themselves. They can restore lost health in multiple different ways and can remove any damage-over-time effects from other players and themselves. Life wizards however, lack a variety of attack spells and may have a hard time dealing with mobs and bosses during battle.

School of Myth

Myth wizards are usually the best when it comes to fighting alone. They can summon minions to aid them in battle, making things much easier for them. As they reach higher levels, they will gain access to stronger minions with more health and a better set of spells. Myth wizards do however, run the risk of losing any damage boosts placed on the enemy when summoning a minion.

School of Death

Death wizards have great survivability when on their own. They have attacks that can deal damage and drain health from enemies while healing them at the same time for half of the damage dealt. They can even use utility spells of their own either by weakening enemies or supporting allies. This however, often requires that the death wizard deals damage directly to themselves, which means they can be killed by their own spells if they aren’t careful!

School of Balance

Balance wizards have the largest variety of spells out of all schools of magic. They can participate as supporters or damage dealers. Their spells are universal meaning they can be used by any school of magic! A balance wizard’s attacks are unique as there are very few shields can block their damage. They can even use magic from every school of magic but at a much smaller degree. Wizards from the school of balance will carry the most arsenal of spells but this school is quite difficult to master.

Keep Track of Enemy Spells

-Usually when an enemy uses a particular spell in a world (Ex. Medusa) then it means that the spell will likely be used again by enemies who are of the same school of magic. If you come across bosses and other enemies who are ice and are using the spell “Tower Shield”, then expect other ice school mobs and bosses to be using that same spell in the current world and onwards. Prepare your spell deck with the proper spells to defeat certain enemies and counter their spells.

~Prepare wand attacks, Pierce, or Shatter against to remove Tower Shields from enemies. (Ice school enemies will most likely use these spells)

~Prepare wand attacks or Cleanse to remove Weakness, Plague and Virulent Plague from yourself. (Death School and Balance School enemies will most likely use these spells)

~Use Stun Block and/or Conviction against enemies that can stun you with their spells (Myth School and Ice School enemies will most likely use these spells). A “stun” is an effect from spells that will force the target to pass on their turn, regardless of the spell that they have used.

Try to Always Go First

-When faced against a difficult enemy (mob or boss), always try to allow yourself to get the first turn. Going first in battle will always make your battles easier since you will get the first turn and can use your spells before your enemies. (You wouldn’t want to be using healing spell after a boss is about to attack and defeat you right?) If you enter a boss battle by entering a sigil and you are going second, exit to the character selection screen then enter the game again and enter the boss battle once more. If you are in a dungeon then it is recommended that you flee the dungeon instead to prevent losing your progress and return as soon as possible. Keep doing this until you are finally going first.

Watch Your Enemy’s Pips

-A very common pattern with enemies is that they will attack when they have more than 2 to 4 pips during a round, depending on what world you are in. Try to use a ward (shield spell) on the same round that they have this amount of pips. This is an anticipation that they will attack you and you can immediately avoid taking a lot of damage on that same round.

Train Multiple Pets with Different Talent Sets

-Don’t just carry one type of pet with you throughout the whole game just because it’s the “perfect pet”. One pet alone won’t always help you against the changing challenges of Wizard101. The following are suggested examples.

~Try to train a pet with multiple healing-based talents (Ex. Maycast Sprite, Maycast Fairy)

~Try to train a pet with damage-based talents (Ex. Pain Giver, Critical Striker)

~Try to train a pet with resistance-based talents (Ex. Spell Proof, Spell Defy)

You can also train a pet that has a mixed set of these talents if it is effective for certain situations.

Cheating Bosses

Sometimes you will be faced against a cheating boss. These bosses are much more difficult to beat and will require better tactics. Bosses may use their cheats either after a certain number of rounds have passed (cheat cycle), when player uses a certain type of spell or when a specific condition is met during battle.

-Try using spells that can bypass or cancel a boss cheat if possible. For example, a boss may stun you if you use a healing spell. Use Stun Block or Conviction to avoid this type of cheat and use healing spells without risk. (This may not work on some bosses)

-If a condition must be met before a boss cheat will end then try to meet that condition as quickly as possible. (Ex. Bosses may prevent you from damaging them until you use a certain spell or defeat other enemies who are in the battle)

-If a boss punishes you for using a certain type of spell then either try to bypass that cheat if possible or follow the boss’ rules if it is safer. Try to avoid triggering the cheat(s) if you can.
